The research found the five most affordable cities to be:

1. University of Leicester - students were paying around two-thirds of those studying in London. Rental and self-catering halls came in at about £91 a week and five beers at around £8!

2. University of Nottingham - weekly bills were around £10 more than Leicester but the city was still very affordable with rent in self-catered halls at about £100.

3. University of Cardiff - around £92 for weekly essentials. The city was slightly cheaper than Nottingham where rental in halls was around £94 a week.

4. University of Southampton -a bus pass is around £6 a week cheaper than most other universities and the cost of five beers was fairly reasonable at just over £16!

5. University of Bristol - the fifth cheapest place to study with weekly essentials at just over £70 and students can get a weekly bus pass for around £7.

The research found the five least affordable universities to be:

1. UCL/Imperial London

2. The University of Oxford

3. University of Sussex

4. University of Birmingham

5. University of Manchester.
